Podiatry & Chiropody in Great Dunmow

Expert foot and lower-limb care, from heel pain and ingrown toenails to fungal nails, corns and custom orthotics.

What Is Podiatry & Chiropody?

Podiatry and chiropody are two names for the same specialism – the medical care of feet, ankles and lower limbs.

The profession adopted “podiatrist” in the UK during the 1990s to align with international naming, but the training, qualifications and HCPC regulation are identical.

Our podiatrist treats the full range of foot conditions, from everyday problems like corns, verrucas and fungal nails, through to more complex issues including plantar fasciitis, Morton’s neuroma, bunions and diabetic foot care.

Treatment combines hands-on skill with the latest equipment: focused shockwave therapy, sterile nail surgery instruments, evidence-based verruca treatments, biomechanical gait assessment and custom orthotics where needed.

Alongside fixing the immediate problem, we’ll give you the footwear advice, exercises and self-care guidance to keep you walking comfortably long-term.

HOW IT WORKS

Our 3-step process to get you feeling better:

Your First Appointment

At your first appointment, your podiatrist will examine your feet & lower limbs, listen to your history and explain exactly what's causing the issue. You'll leave knowing your diagnosis and the treatment options.

Step 1
Put Your Plan Into Motion

We commence with treatment, whether that's removing a corn, treating an ingrown nail, clearing a verruca, or prescribing orthotics. For longer procedures like nail surgery, we'll book a dedicated appointment.

Step 2
Build Lasting Resilience

We'll send you home with a clear plan to keep your feet healthy: the right footwear, simple exercises, self-care routines and when to come back. Many patients see us regularly for routine maintenance.

We're here to help!

Podiatry is the specialist medical care of the feet, ankles and lower limbs. Podiatrists (also called chiropodists) are trained to diagnose and treat foot conditions ranging from everyday issues like corns and ingrown toenails to more complex problems like plantar fasciitis, biomechanical issues and diabetic foot care.

Podiatry can treat a wide range of foot and lower-limb problems, including:

  • Heel and foot pain: plantar fasciitis, Achilles problems, Morton's neuroma
  • Nail problems: ingrown toenails, fungal nail infections, thickened nails, nail surgery
  • Skin problems: corns, calluses, verrucas, athlete's foot, cracked heels
  • Structural issues: bunions, flat feet, gait problems, custom orthotics
  • Ongoing care: diabetic foot assessments, children's foot pain, routine care for older patients

If you're not sure whether podiatry is right for your problem, give us a call for a free phone consultation.

Podiatry is for anyone with concerns about their feet, ankles or lower legs. That includes people in pain, people with stubborn nail or skin problems, sports enthusiasts wanting gait analysis, parents worried about a child's feet and older patients who want routine foot care. If you've got a foot-related concern, podiatry is almost certainly relevant.

For your first podiatry appointment, allow up to 60 minutes. This gives us enough time for a thorough history, examination and treatment in the same visit. Follow-up treatments are typically up to 30 minutes for the vast majority of cases. We'll confirm the exact length when you book.

It depends on the problem. Many issues can be resolved in a single appointment, such as removing a corn, treating an ingrown nail or fitting orthotics. Stubborn problems like fungal nails or verrucas typically need a course of 3 to 6 treatments spaced a few weeks apart. Chronic conditions (plantar fasciitis, biomechanical issues, diabetic foot care) may need ongoing care every few months. Your podiatrist will give you a clear timeline at your first appointment.

Most podiatry treatment is comfortable. Routine work (removing corns and calluses, cutting nails, treating fungal infections) is essentially painless. For procedures like nail surgery we use a local anaesthetic so you don't feel anything during the procedure itself. Some treatments (such as verruca needling) can feel sore for a day or two afterwards and we'll always explain exactly what to expect before going ahead.

No. You can book a podiatry appointment directly with us with no GP referral needed. We can write to your GP after your appointment if there's anything they should know.

Wear something comfortable that's easy to roll up to the knee. Bring the shoes you wear most often (we'll often look at how they're wearing for biomechanical clues). If you've had any imaging or test results related to your feet, bring those too. Otherwise just bring yourself.

Podiatry is available at our Great Dunmow clinic at 12 Stortford Road, CM6 1DA. The clinic has on-site disabled parking available on request. Just give us a call ahead of your appointment.
