Does this describe you? If so, you’re in the right place. Diabetes puts feet at significantly higher risk of nerve damage, poor circulation and slow-healing wounds. The Reality of Diabetic Foot Care That Most Sufferers Don't Realise...
- Diabetes Changes How Feet Behave
Reduced sensation means you might not feel a small cut, blister or developing pressure point. Reduced circulation means small issues take longer to heal. What would be a minor inconvenience in someone without diabetes can become a serious complication if missed. Awareness and prevention are everything.
- Early Detection Changes Outcomes
Most serious diabetic foot complications start as small, easily treated issues that went undetected. A trained eye looking at your feet regularly catches problems while they’re still simple to address. It’s the highest-impact preventive step in diabetic foot care.
- Your Feet Don't Have to Limit You
Diabetes doesn’t mean foot problems are inevitable. With the right monitoring, education and care, most people with diabetes keep their feet healthy for life. Active, mobile, comfortable and free of complications. That’s what our programme is designed for.
Here at Hellier Health, we understand the frustration.
It’s why we created The Dunmow Diabetic Foot Care Programme.
It combines Diabetic Foot Care Programme, to address diabetic foot care directly.
How Does The Diabetic Foot Care Programme Work?
You start with a comprehensive diabetic foot assessment. We test your sensation and circulation, examine your skin and nails, check for any pressure points or early problems and review your footwear. You'll leave knowing your foot risk score and your personalised care plan.
Your treatment plan is put into action with the right combination of techniques for your specific condition. Most sessions take up to 30 minutes. For longer procedures we book a dedicated appointment.
Beyond symptom relief, the focus is on keeping the problem from coming back. We'll give you a clear at-home routine, footwear advice and self-care guidance so your feet stay healthy. Many patients see us regularly for ongoing care.

Three Common Presentations of Diabetic Foot Care We Successfully Treat
Recommended at least yearly for everyone with diabetes. A thorough assessment of your foot health, circulation, sensation, skin and nail condition, footwear and any active problems.
You leave with a clear picture of your current foot risk, a personalised foot health plan and recommendations for any follow-up.
This is the foundation of long-term foot health for anyone with diabetes.
For patients with reduced sensation (neuropathy), reduced circulation, foot shape changes, history of foot ulcers or other risk factors.
More frequent monitoring (every 3 to 6 months), proactive management of corns, calluses, dry skin and nail issues that could otherwise lead to complications and ongoing footwear and self-care guidance.
Catching and addressing small issues early prevents serious ones later.
Current concerns like a slow-healing wound, a possible ulcer, an infection, sudden swelling or rapid changes in foot appearance.
We assess urgently, treat appropriately and co-ordinate with your GP, diabetes team and hospital foot clinic as needed. Active foot issues in diabetes need a low threshold for specialist input.
If you have an active concern, don't wait. Get in touch the same week.

Elaine TerryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I was lucky enough to see Charlotte about my old lady knees that have been dreadful lately and was fully expecting her to inform me that they need replacing. Instead she calmly and informatively explained what is going on and that by doing the exercises she fully demonstrated and got me to try and with regular ultrasound scans, I should regain full mobility with minimum pain. I will admit I was not particularly looking forward to the session, but after spending the time with Charlotte and having my questions answered thoroughly and being calmly advised, I am really hopeful that together we can help ensure I walk tall and hobble no more! Beth CracknellTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I have appointments here and it’s been a brilliant service, 8 years of pain from a car accident and 2 sessions of shockwave therapy and I can feel the difference! vincent thompsonTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Excellent service from Charlotte following a hip replacement which got me back to normal in record time. Many thanks. A course of 6 sessions of shock wave therapy from Charlotte & Jason has made huge improvements. I'm back walking the golf course and largely untroubled by what was previously a chronic problem. I’ve had 4 consultations with Charlotte due to my Knee and Plantar Fasciitis issues. So far, both are improving nicely Charlotte is both very knowledgable and friendly and manages to put one at ease with her easy going nature. Also impressed with the appointment reminders and the whole set up. I would certainly recommend to anyone Thanks Andy Goodey Rayne Braintree Tony & Diane BakerTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. My practitioner Charlotte, has continued the good work of this practice. Her observations of my stance and her listening capacity seem as important as the therapy she applies. In all these applied skills, find me at last in a good place. I have recommended her to my wife Diane and to a dear friend Shirley after a nasty fall in Spain. All will recommend Charlotte as their preferred Osteopath.. Grateful thanks. A. L. Baker. EA BTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I was assessed and by Charlotte who was really thorough and showed full understanding of my issue. Her treatment plan for me included shockwave therapy and exercises for me to do at home. I have recommended her to friends and I wouldn’t hesitate to seek her help again. Scott HTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. After a big block of training I got a really stubborn knee injury that just didn’t seem to go away for months. I went to Great Dunmow Osteopathy & Health and did their knee pain programme which included focused shockwave therapy. I couldn’t believe how quickly the pain started to go away. Frequently Asked Questions
About The Treatment
Diabetes affects the feet in two main ways. First, high blood sugar over time can damage the nerves (diabetic neuropathy), reducing sensation so you may not feel cuts, blisters or pressure spots. Second, diabetes can affect circulation, meaning small issues take longer to heal and have a higher risk of infection. Together these mean small foot problems that would be trivial in someone without diabetes can become serious. Regular professional monitoring catches and addresses small issues early.
The appointment takes about an hour and covers:
- A detailed history including diabetes control, complications, medications and any foot symptoms
- Sensation testing using monofilament and tuning fork
- Circulation assessment including pulses and possibly Doppler
- Skin and nail examination
- Assessment of any deformities, calluses or pressure areas
- Footwear review
- Personalised foot risk score and care plan
You leave with a clear picture of your current foot health and what to watch for between appointments.
Diabetic neuropathy is nerve damage caused by long-standing high blood sugar. In the feet it can cause numbness, tingling, burning sensations, pins and needles or loss of normal sensation. The most concerning aspect is the loss of protective sensation: you may not feel a cut, blister, hot pavement or pressure spot. Around 1 in 4 people with diabetes develop some degree of neuropathy and the risk increases the longer you've had diabetes.
Daily foot checks are one of the highest-impact things you can do. Look at the tops and bottoms of both feet, between toes, around heels and ankles. Use a mirror or ask a partner for areas you can't easily see. Look for cuts, blisters, redness, swelling, changes in colour, dry cracked skin and changes to nails. If anything looks new, isn't getting better in a few days or you're not sure, get in touch.
Look for shoes that: have a wide, deep toe box (no squeezing or rubbing), have a soft cushioned sole, fasten with laces or Velcro for a secure fit, are roomy enough not to crease across the toes and have a smooth seam-free interior. Avoid flip-flops, open-toed sandals, narrow pointed shoes and high heels. Check the inside of shoes before putting them on for stones, creased socks or anything that could rub.
The threshold for getting professional input is low when you have diabetes. Same-week appointment for: any new ulcer, blister or cut that's not healing in 3 to 5 days, any sign of infection (redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, smell), sudden swelling of one foot or any colour change. Same-day or emergency input for: discharge from a wound, fever combined with a foot wound or any sudden severe pain.
Yes. The whole point of annual diabetic foot checks is to catch problems before you notice them. If diabetes has reduced your sensation, you may not feel issues developing. A trained podiatrist sees and tests things you can't easily check yourself. The National Diabetes Audit recommends a foot check at least once a year for everyone with diabetes regardless of symptoms.
For lower-risk diabetics with good sensation and circulation, yes, normal home foot care is fine: trim nails straight across, moisturise daily (not between toes), check feet daily, wear appropriate shoes. For higher-risk diabetics (reduced sensation, poor circulation, foot deformity, previous ulcer) home nail trimming is best avoided and routine podiatry care is recommended. We'll tell you which category you're in at your assessment.
For your first appointment, allow up to 60 minutes. This gives us enough time for a thorough history, examination and treatment in the same visit. Follow-up treatments are typically up to 30 minutes for the vast majority of cases. We'll confirm the exact length when you book.
No. You can book a podiatry appointment directly with us with no GP referral needed. We can write to your GP after your appointment if there's anything they should know.
Wear something comfortable that's easy to roll up to the knee. Bring the shoes you wear most often (we'll often look at how they're wearing for biomechanical clues). If you've had any imaging or test results related to your feet, bring those too. Otherwise just bring yourself.
Podiatry & chiropody is available at our Great Dunmow clinic at 12 Stortford Road, CM6 1DA. The clinic has on-site disabled parking available on request. Just give us a call ahead of your appointment.
