Joe Back Pain

A herniated disc occurs when the soft inner part of a spinal disc pushes through its outer layer, which can irritate nearby nerves and lead to pain, numbness, or weakness. It’s often caused by wear and tear over time, sudden injury, heavy lifting, or repetitive strain on the spine.

Degenerative disc disease is a condition where the spinal discs gradually wear down over time, often leading to pain, stiffness, or reduced mobility - particularly in the lower back or neck. It’s commonly caused by age-related changes, repetitive strain from bending or lifting, or past injuries that accelerate disc degeneration. As the discs lose hydration and flexibility, they become less effective at cushioning the spine, which can lead to discomfort and other related issues.

Lower back pain is a common condition that can range from a mild ache to sharp, intense discomfort, often affecting daily movement and quality of life. It usually stems from the lumbar spine, which supports much of the body’s weight. Common causes include muscle strain, herniated or degenerating discs, spinal stenosis, scoliosis, poor posture, and injuries from lifting or accidents. Identifying the root cause is key to managing symptoms and finding effective relief.

Sciatica is pain or discomfort that travels along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the hips and down each leg. It’s usually caused by irritation or compression of the nerve roots in the lower spine. Common causes include a herniated disc, age-related disc changes, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, piriformis syndrome, or injury. These issues can lead to symptoms like radiating leg pain, numbness, tingling, or muscle weakness.

Spinal stenosis is a condition where the spinal canal narrows, putting pressure on the spinal cord or nerves. It most commonly affects the lower back or neck and can lead to symptoms like discomfort, numbness, or weakness. Causes often include age-related degeneration, herniated discs, past injuries, spinal tumours, scoliosis, or a naturally narrow spinal canal. These changes can reduce space around the nerves, leading to pain and reduced mobility.

Scoliosis is a condition where the spine curves sideways, forming a “C” or “S” shape instead of a straight line. It can affect the upper back, lower back, or both, and may impact posture, movement, and comfort. Common causes include idiopathic scoliosis (often developing in adolescence with no known cause), congenital spine malformations, neuromuscular conditions like cerebral palsy, age-related degeneration, and spinal injuries. The severity can vary, with some cases causing visible changes, discomfort, or reduced mobility.

FREQUENTLY ASKED BACK PAIN QUESTIONS

We're here to help!

Back pain can result from muscle strain, poor posture, herniated discs, degenerative changes, injuries, or underlying conditions like scoliosis or arthritis. Lifestyle factors such as prolonged sitting or heavy lifting can also contribute.

If your back pain lasts more than a few weeks, gets worse over time, or is accompanied by symptoms like numbness, weakness, or pain radiating down the leg, it's best to seek professional advice.

Yes. Many people find relief through manual therapy, targeted exercises, posture correction, and osteopathic treatment. Lifestyle changes and self-care strategies can also play a key role in managing symptoms.

Not if done correctly. Gentle stretching and strengthening exercises, especially those guided by a professional, can actually help relieve pain, improve mobility, and prevent future issues.

Maintaining good posture, staying active, using proper lifting techniques, and strengthening your core muscles are key to preventing future episodes of back pain.
