Does this describe you? If so, you’re in the right place. Foot wounds and ulcers benefit enormously from specialist podiatry input alongside your GP or hospital care. We offer sterile debridement, modern dressings, offloading where needed and close communication with your other healthcare providers.

The Reality of Wound Care and Ulcer Management That Most Sufferers Don't Realise...

Weeks have turned into months. The wound that should have closed by now is still there. Maybe slightly smaller, maybe the same size, maybe worse. Every dressing change reveals the same picture. You’re starting to worry this could become a long-term problem.

You’ve heard about diabetic foot complications, infections that spread, ulcers that lead to bigger problems. Every twinge feels like it could be the start of something serious. You want a specialist eye on your foot regularly, not just on an as-needed basis.

The practice nurse changes your dressing weekly. Your GP prescribed a course of antibiotics. The hospital follow-up is in 8 weeks. You’re getting standard care but you want more — debridement, specialist dressings, footwear advice and someone who knows feet inside out as part of your team.

Here at Hellier Health, we understand the frustration.

It’s why we created The Dunmow Wound Care Programme.

It combines Wound Care Programme, to address wound care and ulcer management directly.

How Does The Wound Care and Ulcer Management Programme Work?

Your First Assessment

You start with a thorough assessment of the wound and surrounding area. We examine the wound carefully, take a detailed history including any underlying conditions (diabetes, circulation issues, immune problems), check sensation and blood flow and review what treatments have already been tried. You'll leave with a clear plan and the right dressings in place.

Step 1
Targeted Treatment Sessions

Your treatment plan is put into action with the right combination of techniques for your specific condition. Most sessions take up to 30 minutes. For longer procedures we book a dedicated appointment.

Step 2
Healthy, Comfortable Feet

Beyond symptom relief, the focus is on keeping the problem from coming back. We'll give you a clear at-home routine, footwear advice and self-care guidance so your feet stay healthy. Many patients see us regularly for ongoing care.

Three Common Presentations of Wound Care and Ulcer Management We Successfully Treat

Diabetic Foot Ulcer

An ulcer in a person with diabetes, most commonly on the sole of the foot or under a bony prominence. Diabetic foot ulcers need a low threshold for specialist input.

We provide regular debridement, appropriate dressings, offloading advice and close co-ordination with your GP, diabetes team and hospital diabetic foot clinic as needed.

Time is critical with diabetic foot ulcers — early specialist input significantly improves outcomes.

Diabetic Foot Ulcer
Non-Diabetic Chronic Wound

A wound or ulcer that hasn't healed in the expected timeframe (usually 4 to 6 weeks). Often associated with reduced circulation, pressure from footwear or underlying biomechanical issues.

We assess the underlying causes, debride the wound to encourage healthy tissue growth, apply appropriate dressings and address the contributing factors (footwear, pressure, hygiene).

Most chronic non-diabetic wounds heal well with proper specialist care.

Non-Diabetic Chronic Wound
Post-Surgical Foot Wound

A wound from recent foot surgery (bunion, nail surgery, other procedure) that needs specialist follow-up to heal cleanly and avoid complications.

We monitor healing progress, change dressings as needed, watch for signs of infection or delayed healing and provide footwear and weight-bearing advice during recovery.

Regular podiatry follow-up after foot surgery significantly reduces complications and gets you back to normal faster.

Post-Surgical Foot Wound

Frequently Asked Questions

About The Treatment

We treat a wide range of foot wounds including: diabetic foot ulcers, pressure sores, chronic non-healing wounds, post-surgical wounds, traumatic wounds (cuts, scrapes that have become infected or stalled), blisters and friction injuries that have broken down, ulcers from arterial or venous insufficiency and wounds associated with peripheral neuropathy. We also do preventive care to reduce the risk of wounds in high-risk patients.

The threshold is lower than people often think. See us if: a wound hasn't healed in 1 to 2 weeks, you have diabetes and any new foot wound or break in the skin, there are signs of infection (redness, warmth, swelling, discharge, smell), the wound is recurring, you're worried, or you've had a foot ulcer before. Early specialist input significantly improves outcomes.

Debridement is the careful removal of dead, damaged or infected tissue from a wound. It's one of the most important things we do because dead tissue prevents new healthy tissue from growing and provides a home for bacteria. We use sterile instruments and the procedure is usually painless because dead tissue doesn't have nerve endings. Most patients are surprised at how much healing improves after their first debridement.

Yes, closely. With your consent we write to your GP, diabetes team and any hospital foot clinic involved in your care. We share findings, treatment plans, dressings used and any concerns. If we identify something that needs antibiotics, vascular assessment or hospital input we'll refer or escalate. Joined-up care produces the best outcomes.

It depends on the wound. Active diabetic foot ulcers often need weekly or twice-weekly review at first. Stable chronic wounds may need fortnightly. Post-surgical follow-up is typically weekly for the first 2 to 4 weeks. Once healing is established we extend the intervals. We give you a clear schedule and you can always contact us if anything changes.

We use modern wound dressings selected based on the wound type, exudate level, infection risk and stage of healing. This may include hydrocolloid, foam, alginate, silver-impregnated, antimicrobial or specialist diabetic foot dressings. We don't rely on simple gauze for chronic wounds — modern dressings significantly improve healing rates and reduce infection.

Most wound care is comfortable. Debridement of dead tissue is painless. Cleaning and dressing changes are usually well tolerated. For procedures that may be uncomfortable we use local anaesthetic. If you've been through painful dressing changes elsewhere, our approach is different — we use specialist techniques and dressings designed to minimise discomfort.

Depends on the wound location and your overall health. We'll give specific advice. Pressure-related wounds (on the sole or under bony prominences) often need offloading with specialised footwear, padding or a temporary boot. Diabetic foot ulcers in particular need strict pressure relief. We address this at every appointment and provide whatever offloading is needed.

Signs of infection include increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pain, discharge, odour and feeling unwell. If we identify infection we'll either start appropriate dressings and monitor closely, or refer you urgently for antibiotics or hospital assessment depending on severity. Don't wait if you're worried — phone us or your GP same-day.

Healing time depends on the wound type, your overall health, blood supply and how well we can offload pressure. Simple acute wounds often heal in 2 to 4 weeks. Chronic wounds typically take 6 to 12 weeks. Complex diabetic ulcers can take longer. We'll give you a realistic timeline at your first appointment and review it regularly.

Yes, especially in patients with diabetes, poor circulation, foot deformities or repeated pressure on the same area. Once you've had a foot ulcer your risk of getting another is significantly higher. The key to prevention is identifying and addressing the cause (footwear, biomechanics, blood sugar control, daily foot checks) and maintaining regular podiatry follow-up.

For your first appointment, allow up to 60 minutes. This gives us enough time for a thorough history, examination and treatment in the same visit. Follow-up treatments are typically up to 30 minutes for the vast majority of cases. We'll confirm the exact length when you book.

No. You can book a podiatry appointment directly with us with no GP referral needed. We can write to your GP after your appointment if there's anything they should know.

Wear something comfortable that's easy to roll up to the knee. Bring the shoes you wear most often (we'll often look at how they're wearing for biomechanical clues). If you've had any imaging or test results related to your feet, bring those too. Otherwise just bring yourself.
