Children's Foot Care
Treatment in Great Dunmow

The Dunmow Children's Foot Care Programme.

Specialist foot care for children and growing teens.

Targeted children's foot care treatment combining comprehensive paediatric assessment, parent education, footwear guidance and ongoing monitoring for lasting relief and healthier feet.

Does This Describe You?

Your child complaining of pain in their feet, heels or lower legs?

Noticed their walking pattern looks unusual (in-toeing, out-toeing, walking on tiptoes)?

Active teenager getting persistent heel pain after sport or PE?

Worried about visibly flat feet or arches that don’t look like other children’s?

Painful ingrown toenail in your child that’s getting worse?

A verruca your child has picked up that isn’t responding to home treatment?

Does this describe your family? If so, you’re in the right place. Most children’s foot concerns are part of normal development and just need reassurance. Some benefit from gentle intervention or monitoring. We’ll give you clear answers, evidence-based advice and a kind, child-friendly experience your child will be happy to come back to.

The Reality of Children's Foot Care That Most Sufferers Don't Realise...

Their walking looks different. Their feet look unusual to you. They’re complaining of pain but the GP said “they’ll grow out of it”. You don’t want to overreact, but you don’t want to miss something either. You just want a clear, expert answer about whether what you’re seeing is normal.

They’ve stopped doing the sport they love. They’re complaining after PE. Family walks end in tears. Activities they used to enjoy are becoming battles. You can see it’s affecting them and you want it sorted before it dents their confidence.

Some clinics are intimidating, clinical and adult-focused. Your child needs somewhere calm, friendly and patient. Somewhere the clinician actually talks to them, not over them. Somewhere they’ll feel comfortable to come back to if needed. That’s exactly the experience we provide.

Here at Hellier Health, we understand the frustration.

It’s why we created The Dunmow Children’s Foot Care Programme.

It combines Children’s Foot Care Programme, to address children’s foot care directly.

How Does The Children's Foot Care Programme Work?

Your First Assessment

Your child's first appointment is a friendly, unhurried assessment. We chat with your child to put them at ease, take a full history from you, examine their feet and watch them walk and run. You'll leave knowing whether what you're seeing is normal development, something to monitor or something to treat — and what to do next.

Step 1
Targeted Treatment Sessions

Your treatment plan is put into action with the right combination of techniques for your specific condition. Most sessions take up to 30 minutes. For longer procedures we book a dedicated appointment.

Step 2
Healthy, Comfortable Feet

Beyond symptom relief, the focus is on keeping the problem from coming back. We'll give you a clear at-home routine, footwear advice and self-care guidance so your feet stay healthy. Many patients see us regularly for ongoing care.

Three Common Presentations of Children's Foot Care We Successfully Treat

Sever's Disease (Active Teens)

Heel pain in active children and teenagers (usually 8 to 15 years old) caused by inflammation of the growth plate at the back of the heel. Very common in football, running, gymnastics and rugby.

We confirm the diagnosis, give clear activity modification advice, provide heel cushioning where helpful and teach stretches. Most cases settle within 4 to 8 weeks.

Sever's is benign and self-limiting — your child will grow out of it. Our job is to make the period manageable.

Sever's Disease (Active Teens)
Gait and Development Concerns

In-toeing, out-toeing, flat feet, high arches, tip-toe walking, knock knees, asymmetric gait. Most of these are normal variations of development that resolve naturally.

We assess what you're seeing, identify the specific anatomical cause, tell you what's normal vs concerning and outline a clear plan: reassurance, monitoring or active intervention.

The majority of children need only reassurance and a follow-up review. A small minority benefit from orthotic support or referral.

Gait and Development Concerns
Routine Children's Podiatry

Painful ingrown toenails, persistent verrucas that home treatment hasn't cleared, corns, warts or other routine foot concerns specific to children.

We treat each in a child-friendly way — explaining what we're doing, taking our time and making sure they're comfortable. Most routine concerns are sorted in one or two appointments.

We're happy to see children of any age, from toddlers to teenagers.

Frequently Asked Questions

About The Treatment

Any age. We see babies, toddlers, school-age children and teenagers. Common reasons to bring a child include: concerns about how their feet look or how they walk, persistent foot pain, recurring ingrown toenails or verrucas, active children with heel or arch pain (Sever's disease), worries about flat feet or in-toeing. There's no age too young to assess.

Yes, very. Almost all children under 4 have flat feet because the arch develops gradually as they grow. Most children develop a visible arch by age 6 to 8 but some don't fully develop one until 10 or beyond. Flat feet only need treatment if they're causing pain, affecting activity or are part of a wider biomechanical issue. We can tell you whether what you're seeing needs attention or is normal development.

Sever's disease (calcaneal apophysitis) is the most common cause of heel pain in active children and teenagers, usually between 8 and 15 years old. It's not actually a disease — it's inflammation of the growth plate at the back of the heel caused by the Achilles tendon pulling on it during a growth spurt. It's especially common in children who play football, run or do gymnastics. It's self-limiting and resolves once growth slows, usually within a few months to a year.

Usually no. In-toeing ("pigeon-toed") and out-toeing are extremely common and almost always resolve naturally as the child grows. Most are caused by either thigh bone rotation, shin bone rotation or foot shape — all of which typically self-correct between ages 4 and 8. Occasionally an in-toe or out-toe is significant enough to assess or to consider gentle intervention. We can tell you which category yours falls into.

No. You can book your child directly with us. We can write to your GP after the appointment if you'd like us to share findings. If your child has a complex underlying condition (cerebral palsy, talipes, juvenile arthritis etc.) they may also be under hospital care and we'll co-ordinate closely with that team.

First appointments allow up to 60 minutes — this gives time to chat with your child, take a full history, do a thorough assessment and explain things clearly. We don't rush. Follow-up appointments are typically up to 30 minutes. We always work at your child's pace.

Most children's appointments involve no painful treatment at all — they're assessments, advice and gentle interventions like nail care or footwear fitting. For procedures that may be uncomfortable (some ingrown nail work, verruca treatment) we use techniques designed to be child-friendly and minimise discomfort. We always explain what we're doing in age-appropriate language so there are no surprises.

Usually no. Most children's foot concerns resolve naturally with development and don't need orthotic support. We only recommend orthotics where there's a clear benefit and a specific reason (significant biomechanical issue causing pain, certain medical conditions, helping a child stay active during a problematic phase of growth). We're conservative about prescribing orthotics in children.

Children's feet are still developing and footwear matters more than people think. We'll review what your child wears and give clear advice on what to look for: proper fit (not just length but width and depth), supportive structure, appropriate sole flexibility for their age, room to grow without being so big they slop around. We avoid recommending expensive brand-specific shoes — fit is what matters.

Children catch verrucas more easily than adults because their immune systems haven't yet learned to fight off the virus. The good news is children's verrucas often resolve naturally over months as the immune system catches up. We assess each case and recommend either monitoring, gentle treatment or more active intervention depending on size, location, pain and how long it's been there. Children's verruca treatment is always tailored to be tolerable.

See us promptly if: persistent foot pain affecting activity or sleep, sudden refusal to walk, visible deformity that's getting worse, signs of infection (red, hot, swollen), an ingrown toenail with pus or fever, any wound that isn't healing in a few days. For non-urgent concerns (gait, flat feet, recurring small problems), normal booking is fine.

For your first appointment, allow up to 60 minutes. This gives us enough time for a thorough history, examination and treatment in the same visit. Follow-up treatments are typically up to 30 minutes for the vast majority of cases. We'll confirm the exact length when you book.

No. You can book a podiatry appointment directly with us with no GP referral needed. We can write to your GP after your appointment if there's anything they should know.

Wear something comfortable that's easy to roll up to the knee. Bring the shoes you wear most often (we'll often look at how they're wearing for biomechanical clues). If you've had any imaging or test results related to your feet, bring those too. Otherwise just bring yourself.
