Corns and Calluses
Treatment in Great Dunmow

The Dunmow Corns and Calluses Programme.

Painless professional removal, plus a plan to stop them coming back.

Targeted corns and calluses treatment combining expert corn and callus removal with offloading, padding and footwear assessment to stop them coming back for lasting relief and healthier feet.

Does This Describe You?

A painful corn on top of a toe or under the ball of your foot?

Thick, hard, yellow skin building up on the soles or heels?

Tried filing, pumice stones or chemist’s corn plasters with limited success?

Pain when you walk or stand for long periods because of corns or calluses?

Corns that keep coming back in the same spot no matter what you do?

Deep painful cracks (fissures) in thickened heel skin?

Does this describe you? If so, you’re in the right place. We professionally remove corns and calluses painlessly in a single appointment, then work out why they’re forming and how to stop them coming back. Most patients walk out the same day with noticeably more comfortable feet.

The Reality of Corns and Calluses That Most Sufferers Don't Realise...

The corn on top of your toe rubs in every pair of shoes. The callus under your foot feels like walking on a stone. The cracks in your heels twinge with every step. Foot comfort has become something you actively miss rather than take for granted.

You file them down. You use the chemist plasters. The skin softens for a week then builds right back up in exactly the same spot. You’ve started to wonder whether there’s an underlying reason your feet are like this and what you’d need to change to actually fix it.

Open-toed shoes. The beach. A pedicure. Even taking your shoes off at a friend’s house. Thick skin, cracks and corns have quietly made you self-conscious about feet you used to never think about. You want smooth, comfortable feet you don’t have to hide.

Here at Hellier Health, we understand the frustration.

It’s why we created The Dunmow Corns and Calluses Programme.

It combines Corn and Callus Removal, to address corns and calluses directly.

How Does The Corns and Calluses Programme Work?

Your First Assessment

You start with a thorough assessment of the affected area. We look at where the corn or callus is forming, check your footwear and identify the pressure points causing the build-up. You'll leave knowing what's causing the problem and how we'll address it.

Step 1
Targeted Treatment Sessions

Your treatment plan is put into action with the right combination of techniques for your specific condition. Most sessions take up to 30 minutes. For longer procedures we book a dedicated appointment.

Step 2
Healthy, Comfortable Feet

Beyond symptom relief, the focus is on keeping the problem from coming back. We'll give you a clear at-home routine, footwear advice and self-care guidance so your feet stay healthy. Many patients see us regularly for ongoing care.

Three Common Presentations of Corns and Calluses We Successfully Treat

Hard Corn

A small, hard, concentrated area of thickened skin usually on top of a toe or on the side. Painful when pressed, especially in shoes.

Treatment is debridement (skilled removal of the corn) which is painless and gives immediate relief. We then identify what's causing the pressure (shoes, foot shape, toe deformity) and address it with padding, offloading or footwear advice.

Most patients walk out the same day pain-free.

Hard Corn
Soft Corn

A whitish, soft corn that develops between toes where two bones are pressing together with moisture trapped between them. Can be very painful and prone to infection.

We carefully debride the corn, dry the area and use silicone interdigital wedges to keep the toes apart. Footwear choices and foot hygiene are the long-term answer.

Many patients find immediate relief but soft corns need ongoing management.

Soft Corn
Plantar Callus and Cracked Heels

Thickened hard skin on the sole of the foot or around the heel, sometimes with painful cracks (fissures) that bleed.

We debride the thickened skin (much more effectively than home filing), treat any cracks, apply specialised cream and address the underlying cause: biomechanics, footwear, dryness or weight distribution.

Severe cases benefit from custom orthotics to redistribute load away from the painful areas.

How Does The Corns and Calluses Programme Work?

Focused corn and callus removal can help treat corns and calluses by addressing the root cause of corns and calluses directly.

It works by delivering corn and callus removals that stimulate the body’s natural healing response to address the underlying problem.

For recurring or severe cases we offer offloading padding, custom orthotics and footwear guidance so the pressure that’s causing the build-up is corrected at the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

About The Treatment

Corns and calluses are areas of thickened skin that develop where the foot is exposed to repeated pressure or friction. Calluses are flatter, larger areas of hard skin (commonly on the sole or heel). Corns are smaller, more concentrated areas of thickened skin with a central core, usually on the toes or between them. They're the body's protective response to pressure but become uncomfortable or painful once they thicken too much.

The common causes are: shoes that don't fit well (too tight, too loose, hard areas pressing on the foot), biomechanical issues that overload certain parts of the foot, foot deformities like bunions or hammer toes that change pressure distribution, thin foot pads (common with age), being on your feet for long periods and certain occupations or sports.

You'll see thickened skin: yellow, hard and sometimes raised. Calluses are usually painless until they get very thick or develop cracks. Corns are more focused and can be sharply painful when pressed (especially in shoes). Both can become painful when walking, leading to altered gait and sometimes knock-on pain in knees, hips or back.

Diagnosis is straightforward at a clinical examination. The podiatrist identifies whether it's a corn, callus or something that looks similar (verruca, soft tissue lump, blister). We also look at the underlying cause: foot shape, gait, shoe wear patterns and any deformities.

Professional debridement is the cornerstone of treatment. We use sterile instruments to skilfully remove the thickened skin or corn core. This is painless and gives immediate relief. We then address the underlying cause: footwear advice, offloading padding, silicone wedges between toes, custom orthotics for biomechanical issues, moisturisers for dry skin and recommendations for ongoing self-care between appointments.

No. Corn and callus removal is painless and most patients find it relaxing. We use sterile scalpels to skilfully thin and remove the dead, thickened skin. There's no anaesthetic needed, no recovery time and you walk out immediately more comfortable.

It depends on the underlying cause and how quickly the thickened skin re-forms. Some patients need treatment every 6 to 8 weeks indefinitely (especially older patients with thinner foot pads or biomechanical issues that can't be fully corrected). Others come in once or twice while we sort out the underlying cause then very rarely after that. We'll give you a realistic recommendation at your first appointment.

Home filing with a pumice stone or foot file can help maintain results between professional appointments. However, filing at home is much less effective than professional debridement, removes less of the problem skin and risks over-filing or infection if you go too deep. Diabetic or circulation-impaired patients should never attempt home treatment.

Because removing the corn or callus doesn't fix the cause. The corn is the symptom; the pressure is the cause. Until the underlying pressure is addressed (footwear, biomechanics, foot deformity), the skin will keep responding by thickening. Long-term resolution means working with us to identify and address the specific pressure point.

For your first appointment, allow up to 60 minutes. This gives us enough time for a thorough history, examination and treatment in the same visit. Follow-up treatments are typically up to 30 minutes for the vast majority of cases. We'll confirm the exact length when you book.

No. You can book a podiatry appointment directly with us with no GP referral needed. We can write to your GP after your appointment if there's anything they should know.

Wear something comfortable that's easy to roll up to the knee. Bring the shoes you wear most often (we'll often look at how they're wearing for biomechanical clues). If you've had any imaging or test results related to your feet, bring those too. Otherwise just bring yourself.
