Targeted fungal nail infections treatment combining nail debridement and targeted antifungal treatment for lasting relief and healthier feet.

Does This Describe You?

Thick, yellow or discoloured toenails you’d rather keep hidden?

Avoiding sandals, the swimming pool or pedicures because of how your nails look?

Nails that have become brittle, crumbling or lifting away from the nail bed?

Started in one nail and slowly spreading to the others?

Tried over-the-counter paints and tinctures with no real improvement?

Embarrassed about your feet, even with people you’re close to?

Does this describe you? If so, you’re in the right place. Fungal nail infections are extremely common and very treatable when handled properly. We combine expert nail debridement with the right antifungal treatment for your specific case so you can get back to wearing sandals, going to the pool and not thinking about your feet.

The Reality of Fungal Nail Infections That Most Sufferers Don't Realise...

It started as a small patch of discolouration in one nail. You ignored it. Months turned into years. Now the nail is thick, crumbling and the infection has spread to others. Each month feels like the moment to do something but the moment never quite arrives.

No more sandals. No more pedicures. No more swimming pool. Holidays where the dress code is closed shoes. You’ve quietly rearranged parts of your life around what your feet look like. The infection might be small but the impact really isn’t.

The £20 paint from the chemist. The tea tree oil. The vinegar soaks. The new socks. The disinfecting your shoes. Some of it may have slowed things down but nothing has actually cleared the infection. You’re starting to suspect this is just permanent.

Here at Hellier Health, we understand the frustration.

It’s why we created The Dunmow Fungal Nail Programme.

It combines Antifungal Nail Treatment, to address fungal nail infections directly.

How Does The Fungal Nail Programme Work?

Your First Assessment

You start with a thorough assessment of the affected nails. We examine the extent of the infection, check whether other nails or your skin are involved and identify any factors that may be encouraging the fungus. You'll leave knowing the diagnosis and the right treatment plan for your case.

Step 1
Targeted Treatment Sessions

Your treatment plan is put into action with the right combination of techniques for your specific condition. Most sessions take up to 30 minutes. For longer procedures we book a dedicated appointment.

Step 2
Healthy, Comfortable Feet

Beyond symptom relief, the focus is on keeping the problem from coming back. We'll give you a clear at-home routine, footwear advice and self-care guidance so your feet stay healthy. Many patients see us regularly for ongoing care.

Three Common Presentations of Fungal Nail Infections We Successfully Treat

Mild Fungal Nail Infection

A small patch of yellow or white discolouration, usually at the tip or side of one nail. The nail is otherwise normal in thickness.

Mild cases respond well to debridement (thinning the affected area) combined with topical antifungal treatment.

Clearance times are quicker than later-stage infections, typically 6 to 12 months as the new healthy nail grows out.

Mild Fungal Nail Infection
Moderate Fungal Nail Infection

Multiple nails affected, or one nail with significant thickening, discolouration spreading down to the cuticle and some lifting from the nail bed.

We debride aggressively to thin and clean the nail, then start a targeted topical antifungal protocol. Oral antifungals may be discussed via GP referral if the infection is extensive.

Patience is key. Toenails grow slowly so visible clearance takes 9 to 18 months.

Moderate Fungal Nail Infection
Severe Fungal Nail Infection

Thick, distorted, crumbling nails. Multiple nails involved. The nail may have lifted significantly from the bed or have almost no normal nail left visible.

Severe cases usually need a combination approach: ongoing debridement to keep the infected nail manageable, topical treatment and GP referral for systemic antifungal medication.

Full clearance is possible but realistic timeframes are 12 to 24 months.

Severe Fungal Nail Infection

How Does The Fungal Nail Programme Work?

Focused antifungal nail treatment can help treat fungal nail infections by addressing the root cause of fungal nail infections directly.

It works by delivering antifungal nail treatments that stimulate the body’s natural healing response to address the underlying problem.

We then prescribe the right topical antifungal protocol for your specific case. For severe or widespread infections we’ll co-ordinate with your GP for oral antifungal medication.

Frequently Asked Questions

About The Treatment

A fungal nail infection (onychomycosis) is an infection of the nail caused by tiny fungi or yeasts. The fungus invades the nail bed and feeds on the keratin in the nail, causing discolouration, thickening and crumbling. It usually affects toenails (warm, moist environment) but can affect fingernails too. It's extremely common and not dangerous but rarely clears on its own.

The fungi that cause nail infections live on skin and surfaces around us. They get into the nail through tiny cracks or trauma (stubbing your toe, ill-fitting shoes) and thrive in warm, moist, dark environments like sweaty shoes. Risk factors include athlete's foot, diabetes, age, poor circulation, repeated nail trauma and using shared changing rooms or pool areas.

Early signs are a white or yellow spot under the tip or side of the nail. As it progresses the nail becomes discoloured (yellow, brown, white or black), thickened, brittle, distorted in shape and may lift away from the nail bed. Some people notice a slight odour. The nail rarely hurts unless the infection becomes severe.

Most fungal nail infections can be diagnosed by clinical examination alone. The podiatrist looks at the pattern of discolouration, thickness, location and progression. If there's any doubt or the infection isn't responding to treatment we can take a small nail sample and send it for laboratory testing to confirm the type of fungus and guide treatment.

Effective treatment usually requires more than one approach:

  • Nail debridement to thin and clear the infected nail (critical step that's often missed)
  • Topical antifungal solutions or lacquers applied regularly
  • Footwear and sock hygiene to stop reinfection
  • Treatment of any concurrent athlete's foot
  • GP referral for oral antifungals if the infection is severe

We tailor the mix to your case at your first appointment.

Treatment is long because nails grow slowly. A toenail takes 12 to 18 months to grow out fully. So even when the fungus is killed, visible clearance follows the nail growing out. Expect monthly debridement appointments for the first few months then less frequent. Most patients see clear new nail growth from the base by 3 to 6 months and full clearance by 12 to 18 months.

Two main reasons. First, the thick, dense infected nail stops the active ingredients reaching the fungus underneath. Without professional debridement, the medicine sits on top of the nail and never gets to where the infection lives. Second, many over-the-counter products use weaker antifungal agents than what's available through a podiatry-led programme.

Fungal nail infections are mildly contagious. The fungus can transfer through shared towels, shower floors, shoes or pedicure tools. Family members in the same household can pick it up over time. Simple precautions reduce spread: don't share towels, wear flip-flops in shared changing rooms, change socks daily and make sure shoes dry out fully between wears.

Yes, recurrence is possible. The same risk factors that caused it the first time (sweaty feet, ill-fitting shoes, family history of athlete's foot) can lead to reinfection. The key is changing the conditions that allowed the fungus to thrive. We'll cover this in your final treatment review so you stay clear long-term.

For your first appointment, allow up to 60 minutes. This gives us enough time for a thorough history, examination and treatment in the same visit. Follow-up treatments are typically up to 30 minutes for the vast majority of cases. We'll confirm the exact length when you book.

No. You can book a podiatry appointment directly with us with no GP referral needed. We can write to your GP after your appointment if there's anything they should know.

Wear something comfortable that's easy to roll up to the knee. Bring the shoes you wear most often (we'll often look at how they're wearing for biomechanical clues). If you've had any imaging or test results related to your feet, bring those too. Otherwise just bring yourself.

Podiatry & chiropody is available at our Great Dunmow clinic at 12 Stortford Road, CM6 1DA. The clinic has on-site disabled parking available on request. Just give us a call ahead of your appointment.
