Looking for Osteopathy in Great Dunmow, Royston or Saffron Walden?
A holistic therapy that views the body as a whole, osteopathy uses manual techniques to relieve pain, restore balance, improve mobility, and support the body’s natural healing processes.
What Is Osteopathy?
Osteopathy focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing a wide range of conditions by looking at the body as a whole and how its structure and function are interlinked.
Osteopaths are manual therapy specialists. They assess how your body moves and functions, identifying areas of restriction or imbalance, and create individualised treatment plans designed to relieve pain, restore movement, and improve overall function.
Treatment is centred on hands-on techniques such as joint mobilisation, soft tissue release, and gentle manipulations. Osteopathy can support recovery after injury, postural strain, or illness, and it can also help improve general wellbeing and prevent future problems. By restoring balance and mobility across the body, osteopaths help you return to daily activities with greater ease and less discomfort.
A key part of osteopathy is prevention. As well as treating current issues, osteopaths provide guidance on posture, movement habits, and lifestyle factors that reduce strain and support long-term health.

FREQUENTLY ASKED OSTEOPATHY QUESTIONS
We're here to help!
Osteopathy is a manual therapy that diagnoses, treats and prevents musculoskeletal problems through hands-on techniques like joint mobilisation, soft tissue release and gentle manipulation. Osteopaths look at the body as a whole, including how it moves, how its parts work together and what's actually causing your symptoms.
Osteopathy can help with a wide range of musculoskeletal problems, including:
- Back, neck and joint pain
- Sciatica and disc-related pain
- Postural strain from desk work, repetitive lifting or pregnancy
- Arthritis and joint stiffness
- Sports injuries and recovery
- Headaches and tension-related symptoms
- Recovery after injury, surgery or illness
If you're not sure whether osteopathy is right for your problem, give us a call for a free phone consultation.
Osteopathy is for anyone with musculoskeletal pain, stiffness or restricted movement. That includes people with back, neck or joint pain, office workers with postural strain, sports enthusiasts recovering from injury, parents wanting help with pregnancy-related discomfort and older adults wanting to stay mobile. If your body isn't working as well as you'd like, osteopathy is worth considering.
For your first osteopathy appointment, allow up to 60 minutes. This gives us enough time for a thorough history, full examination and treatment in the same visit. Follow-up treatments are typically up to 30 minutes for the vast majority of cases. We'll confirm the exact length when you book.
The number of sessions depends on your condition, how long you've had it and your goals. Some acute problems resolve in 1 to 2 treatments. Longer-standing or more complex issues may need a series of 4 to 6 sessions, sometimes more. Your osteopath will give you a clear treatment plan and realistic timeline after your first appointment.
No. You can book an osteopathy appointment directly with us with no GP referral needed. We can write to your GP after your appointment if there's anything they should know.
Wear something comfortable that you can move in. Shorts and a t-shirt or loose clothing work well. If you've had recent scans, X-rays or test results related to your symptoms, bring those too.
Osteopathy is generally comfortable. Some techniques can feel intense in the moment (deep soft tissue work, joint articulation) but should never be sharply painful. After treatment some people feel mild soreness for 24 to 48 hours as the body adjusts. Your osteopath will always adapt techniques to your comfort level and check in throughout the session.
Osteopathy is available at our Great Dunmow clinic and our Royston clinic, with our new Saffron Walden clinic opening in August 2026. Both Great Dunmow and Royston have flexible appointment slots and on-site parking. Get in touch and we'll find a time that works for you.
Elaine TerryTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. I was lucky enough to see Charlotte about my old lady knees that have been dreadful lately and was fully expecting her to inform me that they need replacing. Instead she calmly and informatively explained what is going on and that by doing the exercises she fully demonstrated and got me to try and with regular ultrasound scans, I should regain full mobility with minimum pain. I will admit I was not particularly looking forward to the session, but after spending the time with Charlotte and having my questions answered thoroughly and being calmly advised, I am really hopeful that together we can help ensure I walk tall and hobble no more! My practitioner Charlotte, has continued the good work of this practice. Her observations of my stance and her listening capacity seem as important as the therapy she applies. In all these applied skills, find me at last in a good place. I have recommended her to my wife Diane and to a dear friend Shirley after a nasty fall in Spain. All will recommend Charlotte as their preferred Osteopath.. Grateful thanks. A. L. Baker. EA BTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.
